Mentoring

Mentoring

In an Australian survey in 2003 it was discovered that 67% of Business Leaders and 65% of Senior Executives had experienced mentoring or coaching in their career and that 45% of employees have a mentor or coach in their current role.   I’m sure this figure would be consistent across the western world.

There are many different types of mentoring……Business, Career, Personal and Life are my specialties.

What is the difference between having a Coach and having a Mentor?

Probably the most obvious difference is that a mentor is an advisor using the wisdom they have gleaned over years.   A coach doesn’t need to have had experience in the particular challenge/project/goal on which the coachee wants focus, clarity and results.  A coach is more a teacher.

A mentor doesn’t have an agenda where a coach does.
A mentor is focused on the individual where a coach is performance driven.
A mentor is a confidant where a coach is a more casual relationship
A mentor is a role model where a coaches role is more a partnership
A mentor is in a ‘helicoptering’ role while a coach is more hands on

Mentoring

At the age of 71, through years of experience in agriculture, marketing, property developing, coaching, raising 3 children and now with 8 grandchildren I have the knowledge and wisdom…..I am called The Wisdom Whisperer……to guide you through some of life’s pitfalls and challenges.

But mostly, I find that what I can be is a sounding board who has no agenda and can look at the issues with clarity and in a totally non-judgemental way. Then to see clearly where you are coming from and see wonderful clear answers.
This allows you to talk through your dilemma/excitement /joy or sadness and leave with, probably, at least 2 ways of looking and acting on the subject to come to your conclusion.

Things we may discuss cover can be personal issues, relationships with your kids, family, friends, career changes or issues, happiness, grief (my husband died), changes that are happening to you or that you want to make, finances, time with children.

There are so many topics that we have to deal with and another perspective on them is very liberating
